I fell in LOVE with this one! A must for the gothic garden! I have an affection for planting black and white plants next to each other. One of the few flowering plants that actually prefers part sun to shade. Columbine is a delicate flower that produces multiple flowers in various colors. This one being the most alluring and mysterious with its deep dark brownish black blooms. The contrasting green sepals really make the color stand out!

Columbine focuses on establishing itself the first year and blooming becomes more and more frequent as the plant ages.

These require either late fall or winter sowing for spring emergence or cold-moist stratification which involves simply placing them in a moist paper towel in a sealed ziploc bag and stored in your refrigerator for one month before planting. You can also plant them in small peat pots so all you have to do is remove them and place them in a sunny window or a partly sunny spot outdoors.

In cold climates, plant in late fall when temperatures are below 45 degrees so they will not sprout prematurely and perish in winter. The plants will emerge in spring. In warm climates or if planting indoors, plant when indoor/outdoor temperatures are between 65 and 70 degrees as a general guide, (a little higher or lower is not problematic)after storing the seeds in a moist paper towel in your refrigerator for one month (I provide very detailed instructions for this)  These are perennials and will return every spring or live year round indoors and also self seed very easily so you only need plant them once!
