Cranberry Hibiscus has burgundy, nearly black to vibrant red leaves. The leaves become more red when planted in full sun. In shade it as a house plant, the leaves are nearly black which is an amazing contrast to its red flowers and seed pods. The photo of the small not yet flowering plant is one of my babies, grown in full sun. 
 
Extremely easy to germinate. Nearly indestructible. Can handle full or part sun and even shade, just with slower growth. 
 
The leaves and flowers are edible. We use them in our salads for a super food boost with antioxidants that regular lettuce cannot compete with. Instead of waiting for months to harvest a single head of lettuce, you have a nearly endless supply of lettuce year round and it is delicious! 
 
It also makes a healthy and beautiful red tea. 
 
Cranberry hibiscus is a short lived (a few years) perennial, but is a prolific seed producer that will quickly replace the plants that have reached their life span. When one dies, it will be replaced with several more and they grow extremely fast! 
 
Hardy to USDA zones 9-11 (because it can handle shade, it can be grown indoors.) 
 
Fast grower. Will reach heights of 7 feet but can be pruned into a shrub which will make it bushier. I have two that have grown over my rooftop! It can also easily be kept as a shrubby little adorable bush with regular pruning.
