An absolute spectacular specimen, the African Tulip Tree produces fiery orange red blooms that resemble tulip blossoms. The first time I saw one, its stopped me dead in my tracks, I took a photo and asked my florist mother for identification which she provided. I absolutely had to have one from that point on. That particular tree was photo 2, which was blooming at a very young age, the tree was only about 4 foot.

From afar, the look similar to Royal Poinciana, but the blooms are very different and the blossoms are much larger. Photos don't do this tree justice, there really is no way to truly appreciate its glory unless you see it in person.

This is a tropical tree that is hardy from zones 10-13. Ideal location to grow this tree are Southern Florida, Hawaii and parts of California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada.

In its native African Rainforest, it can grow 50-80 feet. In the US, it normally grows no larger than 25-35 feet tall and 15-25 feet wide.

The bloom period is long, lasting up to 5 months and the tree can sporadically bloom all throughout the year. The bloom time depends on the location of where it is planted. In Florida, it will typically bloom from winter into spring and Summer into fall in California.

The tree produces terminal clusters of beautiful blooms held above the foliage, a profusion of upwardly-facing flowers which open several at a time from curved, two-inch-long, fuzzy brown flower buds filled with water. The water makes the flowers very attractive to birds.
