Native to the southern and central plains, Baldwin’s Ironweed is a resilient and richly colored wildflower that supports a wide range of pollinators. Its vibrant purple flower clusters bloom from midsummer through fall, offering one of the last nectar sources of the season for monarchs, swallowtails, and native bees. Deep roots help stabilize soil and restore structure to prairies and grasslands, making it an excellent choice for habitat restoration, meadow plantings, and pollinator gardens.
Baldwin’s Ironweed thrives in full sun and medium to dry soils, growing 2–5 feet tall with a strong, upright habit and finely textured leaves. It’s tolerant of drought once established and pairs beautifully with native grasses and other late-season wildflowers.
Seeds germinate best after a short period of cold stratification (30 days) to break dormancy. Sow outdoors in late fall or winter, or mimic natural winter conditions by placing seeds in a moist paper towel, sealing in a plastic bag, and refrigerating before sowing. Once established, it’s a long-lived perennial that returns each year with bold color and abundant pollinator activity.
