Tagetes minuta, commonly known as Black Peruvian Mint or Huacatay, is a member of the Marigold family but is more commonly used as a culinary herb. It has a minty taste that is minty, with hints of citrus, basil, tarragon, and licorice. According to one of my beloved customers, Gina, whom I give full credit for introducing me to it, it is more than a taste, but a sensation.
It is also used for multiple medicinal purposes
The strong scent of Tagetes minuta deters a wide range of insects, including mosquitoes, aphids, whiteflies, and nematodes. It can be planted near vegetables and other susceptible plants to reduce pest infestations. The roots of Tagetes minuta release a substance that suppresses nematodes in the soil. This property is particularly useful in crop rotation strategies to control these harmful pests.
The leaves are used fresh, dried, or in paste form and is most commonly found in Peruvian and other South American dishes. Can be used in salads, soups, stews, sauces, and marinades or to garnish or infuse cocktails and other beverages. The sweet, minty, basil-like flavor also works well in chilled desserts. Black Peruvian mint can be used similarly to cilantro in salsas and ceviche and is a good substitute for those who don’t like the taste of cilantro. It pairs well with chile peppers, garlic, onion, cilantro, potatoes, risotto, fresh soft cheese, chicken, lamb, and seafood. Fresh Black Peruvian mint should be used immediately for the best flavor. For extended use, it can be dried and stored in a cool and dark place or made into a paste and refrigerated.
The plant grows quite large, reaching 3-6 feet and even 8 feet in ideal conditions and they have attractive yellow flowers and fern like foliage.
The plant also yields essential oils that are used in aromatherapy and perfumery. The oil is extracted from the flowers and foliage and has a strong, citrus-like fragrance.
In some agricultural practices, Tagetes minuta is used as forage for livestock, providing a nutritious feed option for animals.
This is for 50 seeds.
