Decaisnea fargesii, commonly known as Blue Sausage Fruit, Blue Bean Shrub or Dead Man's Fingers, is an unusual deciduous shrub that belongs to the family Lardizabalaceae. 
 
The shrub is known for its distinctive blue, sausage-like fruits and large, pinnate leaves. The pulpy flesh is transparent and tastes deliciously sweet and subtle, with notes of cucumber and melon. While the blue peel is beautiful, it is not edible and should be removed. The seeds should also be removed, but are fairly large and easy to spot. The large cylindrical fruits are waxy and very cool looking.
 
It has compound leaves that are large, typically measuring up to 24 inches long. The leaves are pinnately compound, consisting of several leaflets arranged along a central stem. The foliage gives the shrub a tropical appearance.
 
In late spring or early summer, pendulous clusters of yellow-green flowers appear on the plant, which are followed by the fruit.
 
It is adaptable to a range of soil types but prefers well-draining, moist soil. It thrives in partial to full shade and is relatively cold-hardy.
 
This shrub is often grown for its unique and ornamental qualities. It can be used as a focal point in a garden or as part of a mixed shrub border. The large leaves and distinctive fruits contribute to its visual appeal. It is low maintenance and also deer resistant.
 
In its native regions, Decaisnea fargesii has been used in traditional medicine for various purposes.
 
Grows up to 10-20 feet tall ad wide, making for a small "tree" that can be pruned into a shrub, if desired. It is technically considered a shrub.
 
The seeds require 60-90 days of cold stratification, which can be achieved by planting the seeds in fall or winter or cold stratifying them in your refrigerator. Simply soak the seeds in hot water overnight, and then fold them into a moist paper towel and seal in a ziploc bag and place them in your refrigerator. It can be helpful to randomly swap them from fridge to freezer as well, to mimic what they would experience outdoors. You can also put them in a bag of sterile vermiculite, so the seeds are in a more "soil like" environment. I don't always recommend this with smaller seeds as it can be hard to locate them later, but the seeds are large and black and easy to see. If you do this, slightly wet the vermiculite, so that it is moist, but not wet. After stratification, sow as normal in potting soil.
