Lasthenia glabrata, commonly known as California Sunshine, Goldfields or Smooth Goldfields, is a species of wildflower native to California and parts of Baja California, Mexico. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and is known for its bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that create a striking display in vernal pools and other wetland habitats during the spring.
 
This plant is particularly associated with vernal pools—seasonal wetlands that fill with rainwater during the winter and gradually dry out in the spring. It is highly adapted to these unique environments, thriving in the alkaline or clay-heavy soils that are characteristic of such ecosystems.
Goldfields grow to about 4 to 12 inches in height, forming low, dense mats or clusters. The stems are slender and smooth (hence the name "glabrata," which means smooth or hairless), and the small, linear leaves are arranged oppositely along the stem. The flowers are composed of golden-yellow ray florets surrounding a slightly darker, central disk, making them highly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
 
It plays an essential role in the vernal pool ecosystems by supporting native pollinators and providing a habitat for other specialized plants and animals. Its seeds contribute to the food supply for local wildlife.
 
While this plant is a beautiful and important component of its native ecosystems, it is sensitive to habitat destruction and changes in hydrology. Vernal pool habitats are increasingly threatened by urban development, agriculture, and other human activities, making the conservation of Lasthenia glabrata and its habitat a priority in some regions.
