Canada wild rye (Elymus canadensis) is a cool-season, perennial bunchgrass native to much of North America. It typically grows 3-5 feet tall, forming attractive clumps with arching, bristly seed heads that sway gracefully in the wind. The leaves are bluish-green and clasp the stems at the base, giving the plant a striking appearance.
 
This grass prefers full sun with dry to medium moisture soils, though it adapts well to various soil types, including poor or eroded soils. Canada wild rye is drought-tolerant and helps control erosion, making it a valuable plant for restoration and naturalized landscapes. It supports wildlife by providing seeds for birds and cover for small animals.
 
The plant is relatively low-maintenance, self-seeding in optimal conditions, and can be propagated by seeds or division. It is native to so much of the United States and Canada, that it would be easier for me to tell you where it is NOT native. It is native to every state EXCEPT, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana and Alaska.
 
The seeds can benefit from a period of cold. You can normally get away with just 2 weeks, but 4 weeks if best for maximum germination. Seeds can be planted outside in fall or winter for a spring emergence or cold stratified in your refrigerator. For artificial stratification, fold seeds into a moist paper towel and then seal in a ziploc bag and place in your refrigerator for 2-4 weeks, then sow as normal.
