Gloriosa superba, commonly known as the flame lily or glory lily, is a striking and distinctive flowering plant, belonging to the family Colchicaceae. The colors remind me of a sunset.

The flowers have a unique shape resembling flames, which gives rise to its common name "flame lily."

The blooms are a brilliant red to orange-red color with yellow edges. They are absolutely glorious, in reference to the other name, Gloriosa.

The plant has a vine like habit with tendrils that will grab onto fences, trellis or other vegetation. The plant has long, slender, glossy leaves

In various cultures, the flame lily symbolizes different things, often associated with passion, beauty, and transformation.

Gloriosa goes dormant and returns every July/August and will continue to grow and bloom until late October. Each year, the plants grow fuller and produce more abundant blooms. In just a couple of years. you can have an amazing patch of these beautiful plants. Regardless of when they are planted, the seeds (which transform into tubers) will remain dormant until August.

It prefers well-drained, sandy soil and plenty of sunlight. It can be grown outdoors in warm climates or indoors in pots in cooler climates.

Perennial zones 8-10, can be grown in pots and brought indoors in winter, during its dormancy period and returned outdoors after danger of frost.

These require patience with a big pay off. These seeds are adapted to a South Florida climate and don't generally need a period of cold as temps rarely drop below 50 here anymore, however, if it is too late in the season, the seeds will remain dormant until the following summer. The seeds are tough and will not perish in the soil. They will emerge when conditions are just right.
