Blue toadflax (Nuttallanthus canadensis), also known as Canada toadflax or old-field toadflax, is a delicate annual or biennial wildflower native to North America. It is a member of the Plantaginaceae family and is commonly found in open, sandy soils, roadsides, fields, and disturbed areas, thriving in a wide range of conditions.
It grows to a height of 6 to 24 inches, with slender, upright stems and narrow, linear leaves that are sparsely arranged. Its small but charming flowers are tubular and snapdragon-like, featuring a pale lavender-blue or violet color with a white or yellow throat. These blooms, appearing from spring through summer, are often clustered loosely along the upper portions of the stems.
Blue toadflax is pollinated by bees and other insects that are attracted to its nectar and snapdragon-shaped flowers. It is an important species for supporting native pollinators and contributes to the biodiversity of its habitats. Despite its fragile appearance, it is a hardy plant that self-seeds readily, making it a common sight in its native range.
It is native to almost all US States and Canada (see map photo)
This plant is easy to grow from seed and is sometimes included in wildflower mixes for naturalized gardens or meadow plantings. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, sandy or loamy soils, but it is adaptable to less ideal conditions, making it a resilient choice for restoration projects or low-maintenance landscaping. Its airy and understated beauty makes it an excellent companion to other wildflowers in a naturalized setting.
