A vigorous, twining native vine, Honeyvine Milkweed is one of the most important yet overlooked host plants for Monarch butterflies across the central and eastern United States. Its heart-shaped leaves and delicate clusters of white, sweetly scented flowers provide nectar throughout summer, while its foliage serves as vital food for Monarch caterpillars.

Unlike tropical milkweed, Honeyvine is fully native, drought-tolerant, and exceptionally resilient. It scrambles gently along fences, trellises, arbors, or naturalized meadow edges, forming a light, airy presence that never feels heavy or woody. In fall, it produces slender pods that split open to release silky seeds, a hallmark of the milkweed family.

This species is ideal for pollinator gardens, native habitat restoration, meadows, and wildlife plantings, especially in areas where Monarch habitat has declined. Once established, Honeyvine comes back reliably each year from its perennial root system.

Native range: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin.

The seeds require 30-60 days of stratification (cold) to break dormancy. This can be achieved by planting the seeds in fall/winter for a spring emergence or folding the seeds into a moist paper towel and sealing in a ziploc bag and placing them in your refrigerator, then sow outdoors as normal.
