Indigo Apple is another tomato that is classified as a “blue” tomato. Blue tomatoes are actually closer to black but they contain the same anthocyanins found in blueberries. 
 
Indigo Apple is similar to Indigo Rose but is a medium sized tomato versus the Indigo rose that is more typically categorized as a cherry type. 
 
They are an intense black color when exposed to full sun. Whatever part of the tomato is facing the sun, will be jet black. This means that if you have it growing in full sun, preferably southern facing, for maximum exposure, you can yield tomatoes that are almost entirely black. Tomatoes with an Eastern or morning sun exposure will tend to be more red on one side, same with western exposure, although afternoon sun is stronger. Northern exposure will yield tomatoes with more red than black. Something as simple as a leaf covering part of the tomato, will leave a red leaf shaped mark on the skin of the tomato. That is how photosensitive these are to light. They tend to have more coloration on the top, for obvious reasons, as the sun is overhead. You can gently trellis the tomatoes and tie them to expose more sides of the tomatoes to sunlight as they grow and pruning of leaves is also encouraged. 
 
The insides are a beautiful contrasting red. 
 
These weigh an average of 4-6 ounces, versus the Indigo rose, which is typically 1-2 ounces. It is a medium sized slicing tomato. 
 
Indeterminate (meaning that growth of the vines are continuous and limitless until frost or when the life cycle is completed, as tomatoes can live for 2-3 years in warm climates. 
 
The cultivar is a spin off of Indigo Rose, which was developed by Oregon State University, by cross breeding via open pollination. This cultivar was also developed by cross breeding via open pollination. It is NOT genetically modified, nor are any of the seeds that we sell.
