Finally back in stock! A true rarity among native milkweeds, Purple Milkweed is one of the most striking and sought-after wild species in North America. Its rich magenta flower clusters glow like jewels against deep green foliage, drawing in Monarchs, Swallowtails, bumblebees, and even hummingbirds all summer long.
 
Unlike common or tropical milkweeds, Asclepias purpurascens is a slow-germinating native species that takes patience and care to grow successfully. That’s part of what makes it so specialand why genuine seed is difficult to find. Every seed we offer is authentic, verified Asclepias purpurascens, never bulk or imported substitutes and is cleaned, tested, and stored under controlled conditions to preserve viability.
 
Seeds require a cold stratification period to awaken from dormancy. For best results, expose to 30 days of temperatures below 45 degrees, either by sowing outdoors in late fall or by placing seeds in a moist paper towel sealed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for one month before planting. Germination will be poor above 85°F, so be sure that temps are between 65 and 75 degrees when placing outdoors to germinate, if artificially cold stratifying. 
 
Once established, Purple Milkweed grows 2–3 feet tall, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. Hardy in zones 3–9, it returns year after year, offering critical habitat for Monarch caterpillars and long-lasting nectar for native pollinators.
