A striking native wildflower of the tallgrass prairie, Prairie Ironweed brings vivid color and vital habitat to any native planting. Tall, upright stems topped with clusters of bold purple blooms rise above summer grasses, providing nectar for monarchs, swallowtails, and countless native bees. Its deep roots anchor soil and restore structure to prairie and wet meadow ecosystems, making it a cornerstone species for habitat restoration and pollinator projects.

Prairie Ironweed prefers full sun and moist to medium soils, thriving in naturalized meadows, rain gardens, and along pond edges. It forms elegant clumps 3–6 feet tall, blooming from July through September when few other native perennials are in peak color.

Seeds benefit from a short period of cold stratification (60 days) to improve germination. Sow outdoors in late fall or winter, or mimic winter by sealing seeds in a moist paper towel, placing in a plastic bag, and refrigerating before sowing. Once established, Prairie Ironweed is long-lived, hardy, and beloved by pollinators.
