Red romaine lettuce is a vibrant and nutritious leafy green that combines the crisp texture of traditional romaine with a stunning reddish-purple hue. This striking color comes from anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that contribute to its health benefits. Like other varieties of lettuce, red romaine is a cool-season crop, thriving in temperatures between 40°F and 75°F. It’s relatively easy to grow and can be cultivated in garden beds, containers, or hydroponic systems. This lettuce matures in about 60–70 days, though its tender baby leaves can be harvested earlier for salads.
One of the primary benefits of growing red romaine lettuce is its nutritional value. It is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folate and manganese. The antioxidants in its red pigments support heart health and help reduce inflammation. Its high water content and fiber aid in hydration and digestion, making it a refreshing and healthy addition to meals. Growing your own ensures that you have access to fresh, pesticide-free produce while reducing food miles and environmental impact.
Additionally, red romaine is a beautiful addition to the garden, adding a splash of color to vegetable beds or edible landscaping. It is also versatile in the kitchen, providing both aesthetic appeal and crunch to salads, wraps, and sandwiches. As a "cut-and-come-again" crop, red romaine can be harvested multiple times by snipping outer leaves while allowing the plant to continue growing, maximizing yields from a small space. For gardeners, red romaine lettuce offers not only nutritional and culinary rewards but also the satisfaction of cultivating a visually appealing and sustainable food source.

A NOTE ON SEED STORAGE:
The key for seed storage is cool, dark and dry. If your temperatures are not quite right for planting, you can keep the seeds viable by keeping them in the plastic bag that I send them in (which is thick and food grade for specifically this purpose,) place that in a paper bag to block light and put it in your refrigerator until you are ready to plant. This can be done with most all seeds and will keep them viable for 1-5 years depending on the species. If you have a basement, you can store them there as well. A sealed mason jar in a paper bag is also ideal.
