Western Blue-Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium bellum) is a perennial wildflower native to California, Oregon, and Baja California. Despite its name, it is not a true grass but a member of the iris family, producing vivid violet-blue, star-shaped blooms above slender green leaves. Growing 6–18 inches tall, it thrives in sun to light shade, tolerates summer dryness, and attracts pollinators to wildflower plantings, borders, and naturalized areas.
Perennial zones 4-9
In Zones 4–6, it may behave more like a short-lived perennial or reseeding wildflower, coming back reliably where winters aren’t too harsh.
In Zones 7–9, especially in its native California and Oregon, it grows as a longer-lived perennial and often naturalizes beautifully. Blue Eyed Grass blooms from winter into spring, making it a great late season planting in warmer zones.
Sow seeds in fall or winter for a spring emergence or cold stratify the seeds in your refrigerator for 60 days. To artificially cold stratify, fold the seeds into a moist paper towel and seal in a ziploc bag and place the seeds in your refrigerator for 60 days, it can also be beneficial to alternate between refrigerator and freezer at random, as they would experience in nature. Then sow the seeds outdoors, when temperatures reach 65-70 degrees.
