Unlike the showy climbing clematis, Clematis integrifolia stands apart with a haunting, solitary presence. This bushy, non-climbing perennial rises 18–30 inches tall, carrying its flowers on upright stems like candles in a midnight garden. Before they open, the buds hang heavy, deep blue-violet and almost black in the fold, giving them a dusky, mysterious allure.
 
When the blooms unfurl in early summer, their nodding, bell-shaped petals retain that shadowy richness, a blue so dark it borders on indigo. After flowering, the plant produces silvery, tangled seed heads that look like ghostly smoke drifting above the foliage,  a striking contrast that extends its interest into autumn.
 
Perfect for those who prefer plants with a darker, more contemplative presence. Clematis integrifolia weaves itself beautifully into borders, cottage plantings, or moody perennial beds, where its dusky buds and deep flowers add drama and depth. It grows best in well-drained soil, with roots kept cool and shaded while the top growth reaches toward the sun. require 90 days or cold stratification. Seeds can be sown in fall or cold stratified in your refrigerator - fold the seeds into a moist paper towel and then a ziploc bag and placed in your refrigerator for 90 days, then sow as normal.
