Pumpkin Spice Jalapeño is a pepper variety that combines the heat and flavor of a jalapeño with a stunning warm orange color, reminiscent of autumn tones. This color is thanks to carotenoids, phytochemicals responsible for yellow, orange, and red pigments in many fruits and vegetables. Specifically, carotenoids like beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and capsanthin are likely contributors to the orange color. Pumpkins also contain carotenoids, so the name wasn't just a reference to fall vegetables, but actually carries some weight when you consider that it shares phytochemicals with pumpkins!
 
This variety matures from green to a rich pumpkin-orange hue. Its flavor is similar to a traditional jalapeño, with a moderate heat level balanced by a slightly sweet, fruity undertone, especially as the peppers ripen fully.
 
These carotenoids develop as the pepper ripens, transitioning from green (when chlorophyll dominates) to orange as chlorophyll breaks down and the carotenoids become more visible. Carotenoids not only provide the stunning color but also act as antioxidants, offering potential health benefits.
 
The plants are compact, typically reaching about 24–36 inches tall. The peppers are medium-sized, averaging 2–3 inches long. They are excellent for fresh eating, stuffing, grilling, pickling, or adding a some color and spice to salsa.

Most people don’t know that the trick to big healthy peppers that you see in the store is calcium!
 
Peppers require calcium to reach their maximum potential and to help them combat pests naturally. 
Use your spent eggshells or garden gypsum to add calcium to the soil in addition to vegetable fertilizer. I use organic chicken manure based fertilizer. 
 
Do not plant peppers where you just previously planted tomatoes, eggplant or potatoes as this can make them more susceptible to disease as they are all from
the same family. The pests that are attracted to these plants can remain in the soil for a while and build up and cause problems for future crops. They also use the same nutrients and can deplete the soil of what they need in particular if planted in the same spot. It’s always good as a general rule to add fresh soil and rotate all crops. 
 
Zones 4-8: Plant when all danger of frost has passed when daytime temps reach 70 degrees or start indoors with good strong lighting and transfer outdoors when temps have reached 70 degrees.
 
Zones 9+: Plant any time of year.
