A keystone species of the Great Plains and one of North America’s most valuable native grasses for habitat restoration. Sideoats Grama is instantly recognizable by its elegant, dangling and charming, red, oat-like flowers that hang in neat rows along one side of each stem, delicate in appearance yet vital to the prairie ecosystem.
This warm-season perennial bunchgrass grows 1–3 feet tall, turning copper-gold in autumn. Deep-rooted and drought-tolerant, it stabilizes soil, restores structure to worn land, and supports countless species of wildlife. Its fine texture and graceful seed stems make it both ecologically essential and ornamental in meadows, prairie plantings, and native garden borders.
Sideoats Grama provides cover and nesting for birds, forage for grazing animals, and habitat for native pollinators. It’s one of the core grasses used in prairie and rangeland restoration across the United States.
