I GET A LOT OF REQUESTS FOR TROPICAL MILKWEED, AKA SILKY RED OR SILKY YELLOW. I DO NOT CARRY IT, AS IT CARRIES A PARASITE THAT CAN HARM/KILL MONARCHS AND SPREAD FROM CONTACT WITH OTHER BUTTERFLIES.
PLEASE DO THE MONARCHS A FAVOR AND PURCHASE NATIVE SEEDS. TROPICAL MILKWEED IS NOT NATIVE TO THE U.S. ALL ASCLEPIAS SEEDS IN MY SHOP ARE NATIVE AND DO NOT CARRY THIS PARASITE.

This is for 20 seeds

Prairie Milkweed (Asclepias sullivantii) is a rare and beautiful North American native that thrives in open meadows and prairie landscapes. With broad, glossy leaves with beautiful pink veining and clusters of fragrant pink to rose-colored blooms in midsummer, this milkweed is a magnet for pollinators—especially monarch butterflies, which rely on milkweed as a host plant for their caterpillars.

Prairie Milkweed prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soils, though it will tolerate average garden conditions once established. Plants grow 2–3 feet tall, forming upright clumps topped with rounded flower umbels that add soft color and wildlife value to naturalized plantings. As with other milkweeds, it produces slender seed pods in late summer that split open to release silky seeds to the wind.

Cold hardy in USDA Zones 3–9, Prairie Milkweed is an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, prairie restorations, and wildflower meadows. Easy to grow from seed with a short cold stratification period, it will reward you year after year with blooms that support monarchs and a host of other beneficial insects. The seeds can also be direct sown in fall in so they can go through a natural cold stratification and they will emerge in spring or they can be cold stratified in your refrigerator by folding them in a moist paper towel, placing them in a sealed plastic bag and putting them in your refrigerator for 30 days before planting.

Please note that the sap of this plant can cause skin sensitivities in some people. You should always wash your hands after handling milkweed.

Hardy to zones 3-9. Plant in full sun and keep soil moist.
