Yaupon Holly Seeds (Ilex vomitoria)
North America’s only native caffeinated plant. Evergreen beauty with a remarkable and controversial history.
Yaupon holly is a beautiful evergreen shrub native to the southeastern United States, admired for its glossy green leaves, vibrant red berries (on female plants), and exceptional resilience.
It belongs to the holly genus (Ilex), the same group that includes traditional ornamental hollies, and can be pruned and shaped into an exceptionally attractive dense shrub, hedge, or elegant small tree. It forms dense, attractive hedges or small trees and provides year-round ornamental interest.
For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples of the Southeast harvested and roasted yaupon leaves to prepare a traditional caffeinated tea. This beverage was highly valued, containing natural caffeine comparable to coffee or tea, and was used both ceremonially and as a daily stimulant. Yaupon is the only plant native to North America known to naturally contain caffeine, making it uniquely significant.
The botanical name, Ilex vomitoria, has long raised questions. Early European colonists observed ceremonial use of yaupon and documented purification rituals they did not fully understand. Rather than recognizing the plant’s value as a caffeine source, they assigned it a name suggesting it induced vomiting. Many historians and ethnobotanists believe this naming reflected misunderstanding, cultural bias, or even deliberate efforts to discourage widespread adoption of a native caffeinated plant that could compete with imported tea and coffee from overseas trade.
In reality, yaupon holly has been safely consumed for generations when properly prepared, and modern interest in yaupon tea has grown as people rediscover this native and sustainable source of natural caffeine.
Beyond its cultural and historical significance, yaupon is an exceptionally durable and adaptable landscape plant. It tolerates drought, heat, poor soils, and coastal conditions once established, making it ideal for edible landscapes, native plant gardens, and long-term perennial plantings.
