Stipa tenuissima, commonly known as Pony Tails or Mexican Feather Grass, is an elegant ornamental grass prized for its fine texture and graceful appearance. Native to the southwestern United States, Mexico, and parts of South America, it is known for its versatility and resilience.
This grass features fine, hair-like green foliage, forming dense clumps that reach 12 to 24 inches in height and width. In summer, it produces delicate, feathery flower heads that transition from green to silvery beige, adding movement and softness to gardens. Stipa tenuissima is a perennial in warmer climates (USDA zones 6–12) but is often grown as an annual in cooler areas. It grows quickly and self-seeds readily.
It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky types. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal care. Overwatering should be avoided as it can cause root rot.
This grass is widely used in naturalistic and meadow-style gardens, where its soft, flowing appearance enhances the overall design. It pairs well with other drought-tolerant plants like lavender, salvia, or echinacea and is excellent for adding texture and movement to mixed borders, rock gardens, or containers. .
