Sticky geranium (Geranium viscosissimum) is a native wildflower found throughout the western United States and parts of Canada. It thrives in montane meadows, forest openings, and grassy slopes, often at elevations ranging from 3,000 to 9,000 feet. This herbaceous perennial is known for its sticky-hairy stems and deeply lobed, fragrant leaves. In late spring through summer, it produces showy pink to purple flowers with delicate dark veins, attracting native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The plant grows upright, typically reaching 1 to 3 feet tall, and it spreads gradually by seed in naturalized areas or pollinator gardens.
Sticky geranium is native to the following U.S. states:
California
Nevada
Oregon
Washington
Idaho
Montana
Wyoming
Utah
Colorado
Arizona
New Mexico
It is also native to parts of British Columbia and Alberta in Canada.
To grow sticky geranium from seed, sow in fall for natural overwintering or cold stratify seeds before spring sowing. For artificial stratification, place seeds in moist sand or paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate at 34–40°F for 30 to 60 days. Sow seeds just below the surface in well-drained soil in a sunny to partly shaded area. Optimal germination temperatures are around 55–65°F. Water gently and consistently until seedlings establish. Plants prefer moderate moisture and will self-sow under suitable conditions.
