Honeyberry, also known as Haskap berries and Blue Honeysuckle, are one of the earliest fruits of the season, producing elongated blue berries with a flavor often described as a mix of blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry with a hint of honeyed tartness. These cold-hardy shrubs are prized for both their unique fruit and their ability to thrive in climates where many other berries struggle.
Plants produce dusty blue, antioxidant-rich berries on hardy shrubs that tolerate freezing winters and return year after year. Honeyberries are excellent for fresh eating, jams, baking, smoothies, and wildlife-friendly edible landscapes. Their soft silver-green foliage and early spring flowers also make them attractive additions to the garden even before fruiting begins.
Seeds benefit from cold stratification for best germination. Sow seeds lightly on the soil surface or barely cover, then place in cold, moist conditions for approximately 60–90 days before moving to warmer temperatures. Germination can be slow and somewhat irregular, requiring patience. Ideal germination temperatures after stratification are around 65–75°F. Keep soil lightly moist but not waterlogged.
Honeyberries grow best in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. Mature shrubs can reach approximately 4–8 feet tall and wide depending on variety and growing conditions. For best fruit production, multiple plants are recommended to improve pollination and berry yield.
